Dallas Partners with Sweden UNA for 2003 Adopt-A-Minefield Campaign
Landmines are being taken OUT in Chhnal Moan village, Battambang province, Cambodia, to successfully complete the Adopt-A-Minefield effort by the Dallas Peace Center, the Dallas Chapter of United Nations Association, and other community agencies that have partnered with UNA Sweden to raise the necessary funds.
The $14,000 contribution from Dallas went in the mail to New York March 18, 2003, to be combined with $20,000 from Helsingborg, Sweden. Enthusiastic correspondence between Jonas Nystrom and Lars Tallert in Sweden and Bill Matthews, with translation by Luisa Handem, representing the Dallas groups showed excitement over the arrangement which will benefit the people in northwest Cambodia.
The minefield surrounds an old school and a new school building built to serve 500 children. But they could not be used because of the lethal threat of landmines. Teacher Chom Vitura estimates that nearly 700 more children between the ages 3 to 15 living in the commune can’t receive an education because there is no other school.
We are grateful that we could help. Other Dallas groups taking part were the Community Gardeners Association, the Cambodian Outreach Mission, and Refugee Services Committee of the UNA, and King of Glory Lutheran Church.
