Who We Are
The Committee on Refugees is based within the UNA-USA Dallas Chapter. It is a local community service project, open to participation by the community-at-large as well as members of our organization.
What We Do
The Committee strives to enhance awareness of refugee issues, and inform potential volunteers about how to help with local needs. We do not provide direct services. This project encourages volunteerism for the service providers: various agencies that assist with resettlement (housing, job training/employment referrals, ESL classes), medical & mental health counseling, human rights advocacy & legal representation, and other forms of support for refugees/asylees here in our community for safety.
Who is a Refugee?
According to the 1951 UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, signed by 127 nations, a refugee is someone who has left his or her country because of a "well-founded fear" of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, social group or political opinion. "Refugees" recognized by U.S. policy apply for and are granted protection while still outside the US. "Asylum-seekers" also needing refuge from threat of harm first come to the U.S. and then apply for protection. International law recognizes the right to seek asylum, but does not oblige states to provide it.
How You Can Help
Volunteers are valuable community partners who can supplement the agencies' efforts. You can take initiative to contact them independently, to find out what they need at any time. The Committee distributes a "Volunteer Guide to Refugee Service Agencies" designed for individuals, organizations, companies, schools, religious and other community groups. Both print and online versions of the Guide include suggested activities, and a directory of the agencies' contact information.
